Humility

What is humility? Why is humility important? How do we obtain true humility?

Oxford Dictionary meaning of Humility :

The quality of having a modest or low view of one's importance.

Therefore a person who has humility is not full of their own self importance. A person who has humility is able to listen to others and is able to learn because they do not think that their way is the only way. A person who has humility has the ability to love others.

PHILIPPIANS 2 : 3 NKJV

Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself.

The world that we live in teaches that it is really all about us, our opinion, our truth, our way. It teaches us to be independent in our thinking so that we exercise our free will and decide our own destinies. For instance an extreme example of this is for one to decide their own gender regardless of their genitals. So the world teaches you make your own mind up about everything and whatever you decide should be accepted by everyone else. If you follow this way of living then you have become your own god, because you rule over your own kingdom and you are only answerable to you.

JEREMIAH 17 : 23 NKJV

23 But they did not obey nor incline their ear, but made their neck stiff, that they might not hear nor receive instruction.

The world that we live in today is full of "stiff-necked people", people who are wise in their own opinion, who do not listen to instruction. How much have we all been affected by this? God only knows the answer to that question.

ACTS 7 : 51 NKJV

51 You stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears! You always resist the Holy Spirit; as your fathers did, so do you.

That is interesting, a person who is stiff-necked is not listening to The Holy Spirit. If you are wise in your own opinion that excludes you from being wise in the truth.

JAMES 4 : 6 NKJV

But He gives more grace. Therefore He says:
“God resists the proud,
But gives grace to the humble.”

Therefore if you are wise in your own opinion/opinions then you will not learn from God. If you have made your mind up that you know something to be true but you have not learnt that thing from God, is it really true? How will you find that out if you do not ask God. You see that is why Acts 7 : 51 is saying that if you are "stiff-necked" that you resist The Holy Spirit. He also resists you which is James 4 : 6. This appears to be a big wall between God and man. How then can a person learn the way of the truth if they are worldly? The answer is if they will humble themselves before God.

MATTHEW 18 : 2 - 4

Then Jesus called a little child to Him, set him in the midst of them, and said, “Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore whoever humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

Therefore unless one humbles themselves and becomes teachable like a little child they cannot have salvation. So then humility is not optional if you are a christian but a means by which you become a christian. If we are following Jesus Christ then how much are we continually learning from Him? Do we think that we already know all that there is to know about christianity? Are we teaching ourselves or are we in a real relationship with Christ where He is our teacher in all things? Assumption and presumption and logic should not be applied as a method for christian learning, but simply asking, seeking and knocking. It is as simple as being like a little child before your all wise and all knowing Heavenly Father.
